Medieval Knight - William Longespée, 3rd Earl of Salisbury

William Longespée, jure uxoris 3rd Earl of Salisbury (c. 1176 – 1226) was an English noble, illegitimate son of King Henry II Plantagenet, half-brother of King Richard the Lionheart and King John. He is primarily remembered for his command of the English forces at the Battle of Damme and for remaining loyal to King John. His nickname "Longespée" (fr: long sword) is generally taken as a reference to his great size of weapons he wielded. The six gold lions on blue background are known to have been used by his grandfather Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou.
